Ganduje wants Buhari applauded for crushing Boko Haram (Read full details)

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has urged Nigerians to applaud President Muhammadu Buhari for crushing Boko Haram, rather than disparage his government over economic recession.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2017 Literacy Programme for 3,500 non-literate members of the Kano Vigilante Group, Ganduje wondered why Nigerians chose to ignore the President’s determination to restore peace and security, instead of complaining about shortage of cash, provisions and clothes, noting, “one can hardly talk of material things, if peace was lacking.”

“We should be thankful to Allah that the Buhari administration had recorded significant success in handling the security situation, especially in the North East.”

Predestination, like election, refers to the corporate body of Christ (i.e., the true spiritual church), and comprehends individuals only in association with that body through a living faith in Jesus Christ (Eph 1:5,7,13).

Summary. Concerning election and predestination (Christianity), we might use the analogy of a great ship on its way to heaven. The ship (the church) is chosen by God to be His very own vessel. Christ is the Captain and Pilot of this ship. All who desire to be a part of this elect ship and its Captain can do so through a living faith in Christ, by which, they come on board the ship. As long as they are on the ship, in company with the ship’s Captain, they are among the elect. If they choose to abandon the ship and Captain, they cease to be part of the elect. Election is always only in union with the Captain and His ship. Predestination tells us about the ship’s destination and what God has prepared for those remaining on it. God invites everyone to come aboard the elect ship through faith in Jesus Christ.

Why syncretism is a serious problem

Summary

• Syncretism frustrates God’s purpose and goals for creating mankind. God created mankind in His own image so that he could have with us a loving, personal relationship for all eternity (Rev 21:3). Syncretism frustrates this purpose because the only way to enter into that relationship is through the saving grace offered by Jesus Christ.

• Syncretism trivialises the sufferings of Christ. “Then Christ died in vain” (Gal 2:21). “trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?” (Heb 10:29). When considering the death of Christ, it is of utmost importance to note that He did not die the easy painless way e.g die in His sleep (sleep and not wake up). He died in a most horrendous way ever recorded in the history of mankind. The truth that He even knew beforehand that He would die in that manner is another horror on its own. Yet he voluntarily gave up Himself to such a gruesome event. The crucifixion was not even an isolated event. The stages of suffering that culminated in the crucifixion need further consideration. Do not forget that although Jesus is God incarnate, he was also human.

He displayed physical symptoms that all humans experience. The physical and spiritual sufferings of Jesus Christ began in Gethsemane. “His sweat was as it were great drops of blood” (Luke 22:44). Under great stress, the small capillaries in the sweat glands can break and mix blood with sweat. Crucifixion was a feared and shameful form of execution. The victim was forced to carry his cross along the longest possible route to the crucifixion site as a warning to bystanders. Jesus was nailed to the cross; death came by suffocation as the person lost strength and the weight of the body made breathing more and more difficult. Crucifixion was a hideously slow and painful death.

• Syncretism is a sign of ongoing spiritual warfare and attack on the church. Syncretism is a most pernicious lie originated by Satan, the father of lies (Jn 8:44) and propagated by people, both nonbelievers and even many who claim to be believers. Syncretism is an indication that some people go to church without even knowing who they worship because they are, in truth, not Christians. “Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His” (Rom 8:9).

Poor females 25% more likely to have heart attack than male peers (Read full details)

woman-heart-attackPoor women are more likely to suffer heart trouble than poor men are, a new review suggests.Researchers analyzed 116 studies that included 22 million people in North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia. The findings showed that among poor people, women had a 25 percent higher risk of heart attack than men.

The study findings were published online recently in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.“It’s widely known that people from disadvantaged backgrounds are at greater risk of heart attack and stroke than people with more affluent backgrounds,” said Sanne Peters, a research fellow at The George Institute for Global Health in Oxford, England.

“However, our study has shown there is a significant difference between the sexes. More disadvantaged women are suffering from heart disease than their male counterparts, which is concerning,” Peters added in an institute news release.

“We need to examine why this is happening and make sure women are able to access lifesaving treatment,” Peters said.Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women worldwide, with an estimated 8.6 million deaths each year, the study authors noted.

“There is a clear need for sex-specific research to discover why disproportionally more women than men are suffering from heart disease in disadvantaged communities, and to deliver prevention and treatment programs that will reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease around the world,” Peters said.

New gadget could help couples get pregnant (Read full details)

pregnant-bellyIt is the subject of countless jokes and sitcom scenes – but knowing the best moment to leap into bed and try for a baby is a serious matter for many couples.

Now help is at hand in the form of a Fitbit-style wristband that the inventors claim can identify when a woman is at her most fertile with almost 90 per cent accuracy.

The Ava device recognises when a woman is about to ovulate by detecting subtle changes in her body, such as resting heart rate and skin temperature. The woman wears it while she sleeps, takes it off in the morning and sends the data to her phone.

Its inventors believe the £199 gadget, which is due to be launched in Britain this week, will take the guesswork out of conception and replace the messy and inconvenient urine-test method that many women use to determine their best time to have sex.

Dubbed the ‘fertility Fitbit’, the Ava looks like a watch. The device monitors nine variables which change slightly throughout the menstrual cycle. These include resting heart rate and skin temperature, which rise as the body prepares to release an egg.

It also measures breathing rate, the length of sleep, and movement during sleep. Individually, each of these signals has limited value in determining if a woman is at her most fertile.

But tracking them together means the wristband can identify this ‘window’ with surprising accuracy.A year-long study of 41 women, carried out at the University Hospital of Zurich in Switzerland, found it was 89 per cent accurate at predicting their most fertile five days of the month, as determined by hormone levels.

Lea von Bidder, 26, president of Swiss-based firm Ava, said trying for a baby could be ‘a very stressful and frustrating experience’ for women. She claimed the Ava would allow them to ‘understand the signs their body is giving them’.

But Professor Adam Balen, chairman of the British Fertility Society, questioned whether it would help. He said: “Sometimes these sorts of devices can just cause more stress by forcing people to have sex at a particular time, and that’s not really healthy.”

Couples hoping to conceive should simply have lots of sex throughout a woman’s cycle, he added, as ‘fresh’ sperm was best at fertilising the egg.

And he said: “If a woman has a regular cycle, her fertile days are predictable.”A new ‘hands-free’ breast pump is set to revolutionise the way new mothers feed their babies. The invention, which comes complete with Bluetooth wireless technology and its own mobile phone app, collects milk in a pouch that fits inside a maternity bra.
