European Parliament leaders oppose reported US ambassador pick…Read full details

Ted Malloch

European Parliament leaders on Thursday urged the EU to reject Ted Malloch if he is named US President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Brussels, calling him hostile to the bloc.

The leaders of the main parliamentary groups said Malloch, whom they called Trump’s likely choice, has openly backed the dissolution of the 28-nation European Union much like the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The leaders of the conservative European People’s Party, the largest group in the parliament, the Socialists and Democrats and the liberal ALDE group wrote to European Council President Donald Tusk urging him not to accept Malloch’s credentials if he is appointed ambassador.

“The prospective nominee… eloquently supported dissolution of the European Union and explicitly bet on the demise of the common currency within months,” EPP chairman Manfred Weber and ALDE President Guy Verhofstadt wrote in their letter.

“These statements reveal outrageous malevolence regarding the values that define this European Union,” they wrote.

They warned that if such remarks come from an official US representative, they could harm the transatlantic relationship that has preserved peace and prosperity for seven decades.

“We are strongly convinced that persons seeing as their mission to disrupt or dissolve the European Union, should not be accredited as official representatives to the EU,” they added.

Socialists and Democrats leader Gianni Pittella warned that Malloch’s appointment could “potentially contribute to the spread of populism and euroscepticism across Europe.”

He added: “Malloch should not be accepted as an official representative to the EU and should be declared ‘persona non grata’.”

Malloch is a professor at the Henley Business School in the English city of Reading. The Henley website said he held an ambassadorial level position at the United Nations in Geneva from 1988-1991 and has served on the executive board of the World Economic Forum.

Earlier this month, the departing US ambassador to the EU, Anthony Gardner, warned that the Trump administration would be committing “sheer folly” if it supports the bloc’s breakup.

Cameroon beat Ghana to reach Cup of Nations final…See full details

Michael Ngadeu and Christian Bassogog both netted in the second half as Cameroon beat Ghana 2-0 in Franceville on Thursday to reach the Africa Cup of Nations final.

A finely-poised tie remained goalless until the 72nd minute, when Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah failed to deal with a free-kick into his area and John Boye’s weak defensive header merely served as an assist for Ngadeu to control and fire home.

Bassogog then broke away to clinch the win and spark wild celebrations as Hugo Broos’s side progress to a final against Egypt in Libreville on Sunday.

That will be the Indomitable Lions’ first Cup of Nations final since they lost 1-0 to the Egyptians in 2008. Then they also beat Ghana in the semi-finals.

Ghana, who have still never beaten Cameroon at the competition, will now go to Port-Gentil for a third-place play-off against Burkina Faso on Saturday.

This was their sixth consecutive Cup of Nations semi-final, but their wait to win the trophy for the first time since 1982 will go on.

Just as in their quarter-final win against DR Congo, Ghana were once again without Asamoah Gyan at kick-off as their captain struggled to shake off a groin injury.

In his absence, the Black Stars were second best for most of the first half and Cameroon were unfortunate not to be in front after a lively start to the match.

Adolphe Teikeu saw his header from a Benjamin Moukandjo corner cleared off the line by Harrison Afful and Razak had to get down to save when Robert Ndip Tambe swept a Moukandjo cross towards goal.

Moukandjo, the France-based captain of this inexperienced Cameroon side, also headed onto the roof of the net as the Ghanaians weathered the storm.

With Andre Ayew struggling to get into the game from his position on the left flank, Avram Grant’s side made little impression going forward until five minutes before half-time.

That was when Christian Atsu’s pass into the box split the Cameroonian defence and found Jordan Ayew, whose shot from a tight angle whistled just wide of Fabrice Ondoa’s far post.

In a reversal of roles, Ghana were the better team at the start of the second half with the lightning quick winger Atsu their main source of danger.

When one of his runs was illegally halted outside the area, Mubarak Wakaso whipped in the resulting free-kick and Ondoa flew high to his right to turn the ball behind.

The Indomitable Lions steadied themselves and got the breakthrough from a set-piece of their own, the goal Cameroon’s first in almost five hours since Ngadeu netted the winner against Guinea-Bissau in the group stage.

Ghana then sent on Gyan for the closing stages but as they pushed men forward Bassogog broke downfield and beat Razak to make it 2-0 in the third minute of added time.

Ronaldinho returns for 10-year Barca ambassador deal…See full details

Ronaldinho

Spanish giants Barcelona announced a 10-year deal for legendary former player Ronaldinho to act as an ambassador for the club on Thursday.

The Brazilian, who won the World Player of the Year twice as well as two La Liga titles and the 2005/06 Champions League with Barca in five years at the Camp Nou, has not played since a short spell at Fluminense came to an end in September 2015.

“Barcelona and Ronaldinho have reached an agreement so that the Brazilian star will become an ambassador and representative of the club at different events during the next 10 years,” Barca said in a statement.

Ronaldinho, 36, will also be part of a Barca legends team that will play exhibition matches across the world.

On top of the trophies and 91 goals he scored in 198 appearances for Barca, Ronaldinho’s time in the Catalan capital is fondly remembered for his outrageous array of skills and broad smile with which he often graced the pitch.

His arrival from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003 also heralded a shift in power in Spanish football as he took a teenage Lionel Messi under his wing.

In the 14 years since, Barca have won four Champions Leagues and eight La Liga titles to Real Madrid’s two European crowns and three domestic titles.

Rich man loses millions in scam by fake French defence staff…Read full details

Jean-Yves Le Drian

Crooks masquerading as aides of French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian have defrauded a wealthy foreigner of “tens of millions of euros”, the latest in a string of such scams, a judicial source said Thursday.

The fraudsters called the man — a rich industrialist — in December and then sent him a fake letter that appeared to be signed by Le Drian, the source told AFP.

It was not clear how they convinced him to part with a small fortune but in previous such hoaxes they have concocted elaborate, top secret hostage situations involving French nationals that required urgent payment of a ransom.

Explaining that France’s official policy is to not pay ransoms, the person targeted was then asked to discreetly transfer the money into an account in a tax haven on the state’s behalf.

African leaders, embassies and French companies, foundations and NGOs have all been targeted in some 180 scams or attempted scams reported by the defence ministry over the past year and a half.

While most of the fraud attempts failed, “some have been successful,” the source said.

Investigators suspected an Israeli or Franco-Israeli syndicate of being behind the hoaxes.

NNPC warns bidders to beware of fraudsters (Read full details)

The Group Executive Director, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr Mele Kyari, has warned bidders of oil products to beware of fraudsters.

Kyari gave the warning to the 128 bidders of the 2017 Direct Sale Direct Purchase (DSDP) programme; a programme introduced in 2016 to replace crude-for-oil-products.

“The issues about fraudsters in this industry, particularly in crude oil and gas transactions are so enormous.

“Every day we receive some form of communication, people wanting to know if there is a group that wants to sell something to them.

“All kinds of things that we come across. For the avoidance of doubt, NNPC does not allocate off-spec crude. It does not exist.

“There is nothing like off-spec crude, which is what you see in many documents that are flying around,’’ Kyari warned.

He further warned that the corporation does not have joint crude oil and gas allocation with any company.

“Any company, no exception, NNPC does not do that. NNPC does not participate in spot allocation for now and it is also not involved in any cargo arrangements with anybody.

“These are the kind of documents you see flying around in the system and the people are duped.

“NNPC does not have any agent outside this building and indeed anywhere in the world. The only affiliate company we have, Duke Oil, is in London.

“Those who know, know where to find it. It is on electronic platform anybody can see it,’’ he said.

He lamented the gullibility of buyers, saying: “If l have a cargo of crude oil, the whole world would know.

“You don’t hide it; it is not kola-nut. You don’t do it at Transcorp Hotel. That is what is happening now, people selling crude oil in rooms in Hilton.

“At the end of the day they end up collecting $50,000; $100, 000 from very gullible people as processing fee after which they vanish.’’

Kyari said the new NNPC was transparent and accountable, and has no room for corruption in its operations.

He said DSDP simply meant selling crude in exchange for products and would optimise revenue for the Federal Government in compliance with its anti-corruption drive.

“l am happy to announce that in the last one year, the processes that we have put in place ensured that the products that we received were actually on the higher value than the value of the crude oil that we sold.

“We are very proud of this. This company is committed to make sure that there is availability of supply in our country,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Chief Operating Officer, Corporate Services, Mr Isa Inuwa, said the NNPC had set a trend of complying with the public procurement law of due process in the selection of bidders to execute any of its projects.

Inuwa said this during the Invitation to Tender for pre-qualification of contractors for procurement, installation and commissioning of 4×4.687MVA and 1x635KVA dual engine generators.

He said the corporation was in search of the best supplier, installer and the best price on the basis of a transparent selection process.

He assured bidders that they would all receive equal consideration based on the NNPC criteria and entries made.

The General Manager, Supply Chain Management, Mrs Sophia Ndukwe, said 29 bids were submitted for the supply and installation of generators at the NNPC Towers.

Protesters attack Mimiko’s convoy (Read full details)

Olusegun Mimiko

The crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly took a dangerous twist on Thursday in Akure as some protesters attacked the convoy of Gov. Olusegun Mimiko.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hoodlums smashed the side screens of two vehicles in the governor’s convoy.

It took the timely intervention of the men of the state police command to disperse the protesters, some of whom were also injured in the pandemonium that ensued.

The protest, which started on Wednesday, was against the governor’s move to present the 2017 budget to the Assembly.

Following the protest, Mimiko reportedly shifted the budget presentation to another day.

The protesters alleged that the governor wanted to sponsor 38 bills and ensure that the bills were passed into law before his tenure expired on Feb. 23, 2017.

The protesters vowed to prevent the governor from presenting the appropriation bill to the Assembly.

According to an eyewitness, immediately the protesters sighted the governor’s convoy on the road leading to the House of Assembly, some of them started throwing stones at the convoy.

However, the leader of the protesters, Mr Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, condemned the action of the police in dispersing them, saying that the protest was not a violent one.

“We don’t know why there is this issue of sporadic shooting by the police in a peaceful protest.

“It is uncalled for, and we are calling on the Inspector General of Police, well-meaning Nigerians and citizens of Ondo State to look into the matter.

“What we are protesting for is to tell our people that the governor is bringing a bill that will bring untold hardship to the people of the state. We are not violent with it,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, who confirmed the attack on the governor’s convoy, explained that the police had to disperse the protesters when they appeared to be going violent.

He said that the Commissioner of Police in the state was not biased, saying the commissioner’s interest was to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order in the state.

“Some of them attacked the convoy of the governor; about two vehicles in the convoy were damaged by the protesters.

“We initially allowed them to protest peacefully, we also appealed to them to be peaceful but when they started barricading the road throwing stones at the governor’s convoy, we have to disperse them,” he said.

Erdogan rebukes Merkel over ‘Islamist terror’ comment…Read full details

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday rebuked German Chancellor Angela Merkel for using the expression “Islamist terrorism”, saying the phrase was not correct and saddened Muslims.

Speaking after a critical bilateral meeting with Erdogan, Merkel spoke of the need for Turkey and Germany to cooperate even further to fight against terror, including “Islamist terrorism” and Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants.

“We spoke in detail about… the questions of the fight against Islamist terrorism, against every form of terrorism, also the terrorism of the PKK,” she said alongside Erdogan at his palace in Ankara.

“We agree we want to cooperate, we are all affected by this. We agreed to have closer cooperation in the future,” she said.

Erdogan, sitting next to Merkel, was stony-faced as she spoke.

Many Muslims oppose any equating of Islam and terror, arguing those who commit crimes purportedly in the name of Islam have nothing to do with a religion that espouses peace.

“This expression ‘Islamist terror’ seriously saddens us Muslims,” Erdogan replied, glancing sternly at the German chancellor.

“Such an expression is not correct because Islam and terror cannot be associated. The meaning of Islam is peace.”

He said it would be “saddening” if the term was used because of the crimes of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group, which has been blamed for a string of attacks in Turkey over the last year.

“Please let’s not use it. As long as it is used we need to stand against it. As a Muslim president personally I cannot accept that,” he said.

The president’s comments came after the two leaders tackled a series of hugely sensitive issues during the one day visit to Ankara by the German chancellor at a time of rising tensions between Ankara and Berlin.

His response delighted the pro-government press, with the Yeni Safak daily headlining on its website: “President Erdogan’s warning to Merkel”.

The phrase is controversial and previous US president Barack Obama refused to use the phrase “Islamic terrorism”, saying such crimes distorted and perverted Islam.

But new President Donald Trump has not shied away from using the term, speaking of “radical Islamic terror” during the election campaign and condemning Obama for not using the term.

Indicating that her use of the phrase was no accident, Merkel used it again at her later news conference with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, saying she had discussed the threat of “Islamist terrorism” with the premier.

But she emphasised that “no kind of suspicion against Muslims was implied” with the use of the phrase.

Trump threatens university as protests target far-right firebrand…Read full details

People protesting controversial Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos take to the streets on February 1, 2017 in Berkeley, California. A scheduled speech by Yiannopoulos was cancelled after protesters and police engaged in violent skirmishes. PHOTO: Elijah Nouvelage/Getty Images/AFP

President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to withdraw federal funds from UC Berkeley after violent campus protests forced the cancellation of a speech by Milo Yiannopoulos, a firebrand editor of right-wing news site Breitbart.

The disturbances were a fiery reminder of the university’s history as a cradle of the 1960s anti-war movement — and a sign of the sharp tensions pitting America’s mostly left-wing student body against a far-right minority.

Hundreds of students and other protesters chanting “shut him down” smashed windows at the University of California campus, set wooden pallets ablaze and threw fireworks and rocks at police in full riot gear responded with tear gas.

The university was placed on lockdown as the sold-out appearance by Yiannopoulos, a conservative provocateur and self-proclaimed internet troll who styles himself on Facebook as “Dangerous Faggot,” was cancelled Wednesday evening.

“If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?” Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday.

About half of research at Berkeley is funded by the federal government, according to the university website. Berkeley, however, has been struggling in the past years with budget shortfalls and spending deficits.

Trump’s top political adviser Stephen Bannon is the former chairman of Breitbart News.

Yiannopoulos, Breitbart’s technology editor, is a flamboyant firebrand reviled by his critics as racist and misogynistic but who casts himself as a gay crusader against “political correctness.”

He is often portrayed as a leader of the so-called alt-right — a white nationalist extremist fringe that has found a home on Breitbart’s pages — although he has sought to distance himself from the movement.

He is, however, a vocal supporter of Trump — nicknaming the billionaire “Daddy” during his election campaign.

The 32-year-old Briton is probably best known for inciting a campaign of online abuse against the African-American “Ghostbusters” actress Leslie Jones. Twitter banned him in July.

The Berkeley event was to be the last stop on a college speaking tour that has drawn big crowds and also sparked fistfights, a shooting and at least one other cancellation.

According to an article on Breitbart News, Yiannopoulos was planning to use the event to launch a campaign against so-called sanctuary campuses, which have declared their opposition to Trump’s tough stance toward undocumented immigrants.

Yiannopoulos said on Facebook he was evacuated “after violent left-wing protestors tore down barricades, lit fires, threw rocks and Roman candles at the windows and breached the ground floor of the building.”

“One thing we do know for sure: the Left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.”

UC Berkeley, one of the top public universities in the United States, is the home of the 1960s “Free Speech Movement” that helped launch the era’s student protests against the Vietnam War.

– Violence deplored –
The mayor of Berkeley, one of America’s most liberal cities, deplored the violence by a “small minority” of protesters.

They “provided the ultra-nationalist far right exactly the images they want to use to discredit the vast majority of peaceful protesters in Berkeley and across America who are deeply concerned about where the country is heading,” said Jesse Arreguin, the mayor.

Similar protests at the University of California at Davis last month also forced the cancellation of speeches by Yiannopoulos and Martin Shkreli, a former pharmaceuticals boss who became a hate figure after jacking up the price of a life-saving drug.

The events at Davis and Berkeley were organised by conservative student groups. A similar invitation to speak at UCLA was rescinded.

Officials at the three University of California campuses stressed that they did not invite Yiannopoulos or endorse his ideas but were committed to free speech.

More than 100 UC Berkeley faculty members had signed two letters sent last month to the school’s chancellor, urging him to cancel the event.

“Although we object strenuously to Yiannopoulos’s views — he advocates white supremacy, transphobia and misogyny — it is rather his harmful conduct to which we call attention in asking for the cancellation of this event,” read one of the letters.

They cited as one example an incident in December at the University of Milwaukee where Yiannopoulos openly mocked a transgender student, displaying her name and photo on the screen.

Iran’s ballistic missile test successful: Defense minister revels

p

p

Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan says Iran’s recent ballistic missile test has been “successful.”

“This missile test was successful,” the Iranian minister said as quoted by Tasnim News Agency, emphasizing that “Iran’s missile tests are not, and have never been, in violation of the JCPOA (Iran’s nuclear deal with six world powers) or [UN Security Council] Resolution 2231.”

Dehqan confirmed on Wednesday that the country had conducted a missile test within the framework of its defense program, saying the Islamic Republic does not allow any foreign meddling in its domestic defensive affairs.

The comments come days after the United States called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to discuss the launch of what it described as a “medium-range” missile by Iran. The meeting ended without reaching any conclusive result.

Iranian defense minister’s remarks apparently came in reaction to media reports quoting some US officials as claiming that the test had failed as the missile flew some 600 miles before exploding.

Resolution 2231 was adopted by the UN Security Council in July 2015, days after Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, namely Russia, China, the US, the UK, and France plus Germany, signed the JCPOA, an acronym for the deal called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The resolution, which turned the JCPOA into an international document, calls on Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”

Iran’s defensive ballistic missile program has been a bone of contention with the West. Tehran says its missile tests do not breach UN resolutions because they are solely for defense purposes and not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

Arms control experts have also said that Iran’s missile tests are not banned under the nuclear agreement and the UNSC resolution, because Iran’s missiles are not meant to deliver nuclear warheads.

Iranian officials have in recent days joined voices to support the country’s defense program in the face of the latest provocative remarks by officials of the new US administration on Tehran’s domestic defense agenda.

In a Tuesday statement, 220 Iranian lawmakers expressed all-out support for Iran’s Armed Forces, saying “the reinforcement of the defense capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran in line with deterrence strategy” is an absolute necessity to ensure the country’s national security.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also described missile tests as an “inalienable and absolute” right of the nation, emphasizing that no country or international body can have any say in this regard.

p

Nigerian actor and director, Seun Egbegbe who was allegedly caught some months ago for trying to steal Iphones has been caught once again for trying to steal about 10 million naira from a mallam at the Gbagada teaching hospital.

Toyin Aimakhu’s ex-boyfriend, Seun Egbegbe is in the news for the wrong reasons again. According to reports and a video being shared online at this moment, Egbegbe was caught trying to rip off an unsuspecting mallam of the sum of 10 million naira today, while pretending to be a medical doctor at Gbagada General hospital.

This is surely getting out of hand as this will be the 2nd occurrence in less than 6 months. Something should be done about this guy before he ends up being lynched as he seems to be getting lucky.

He might surely run out of luck next time and besides, is he not supposed to be under investigation? Is February not the date slated for his next court appearance? This guy is surely sniffing the prison gradually and that is if he ever escapes that this time around.

We are waiting for his fans to come and say this is not Seun Egbegbe, that he is chilling in Dubai. 😀

Senate denies collecting N600m for principal officer’s rent (Read full details)

The Senate on Thursday denied that the leadership of the National Assembly received N600 million from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for principal officers’ rent.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the allegation emanated from an online report by a group, Citizen Action to Take Back Nigeria (CATBAN).

The report said that President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and his deputy, Lasun Yusuff, collected over N600 million from the FCT for rent.

Denying the allegation while briefing newsmen in Abuja, Chairman, Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sen. Dino Melaye, said that the social media released “a very fake report last week’’.

“The four presiding officers of the National Assembly collects no rent from the FCDA or any other Federal Government agency for that matter,” he said.

Melaye described the group as “briefcase Civil Society Organisation that is not registered by law in Nigeria; it is not known or heard; it was hurriedly packaged to do assassin job on the social media”.

He said that as chairman of the committee, he had put his integrity to test to say that no kobo had been collected by any of the presiding officers from the FCDA.

“Those who know how government bureaucracy works, know that it is practically impossible for any of the presiding officers to collect money directly from the FCDA.

“It should be noted that while Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweramadu, as well as Honourable Yakubu Dogara and Lasun Yusuf, are entitled to well-furnished accommodation by virtue of their positions.

“If you recall, the President of the Senate insisted last year that the N10 billion which the FCDA put in the 2016 budget for the completion of the official residences of the Senate President and Speaker be removed from the budget to save cost,” he said.

Melaye, however, advised the sponsors of the group to verify their information, saying they got the one in contention wrong.

“I call on fake NGOs like this who propagate falsehood and lies all over the social media to advise themselves and do the right thing.

“I challenge this group to provide evidence in terms of transfers on how any of the presiding officers benefited financially from the FCDA. It is a lie, malicious and baseless.

“Nigerians should not over-react. We must do everything to live in a society where truth, justice and egalitarianism are the watchwords of the people.

‘The Wedding Party’ rakes in over N400m in ticket sales…Read full details

A scene from The Wedding Party

Nigeria’s widely acclaimed film The Wedding Party has doubled the previous record of the most tickets sold by a Nigerian movie and keeps going, netting over N400m at the box office.

In December 2016, the Nollywood box-office record stood at N178.5 million and looked likely to remain for some time, especially in the midst of the current recession. However, when the ELFIKE Collective released its romantic comedy, The Wedding Party, on 16th December, the film racked up N203 million in just two weeks, to top the Nigerian box office for 2016 and become the highest-grossing Nollywood film in history.

For the first time, a Nigerian film beat all Hollywood contenders at the Nigerian box office, including ‘Batman vs. Superman’ (N140m), ‘Captain America’ (N119m) and ‘Suicide Squad’ (N116m). In an amazing year for Nigerian movies, ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ (N178.5m) and ‘76’ (N72 million) joined ‘The Wedding Party’ in the Top 10 chart at no.2 and no.10 respectively. Other top Nollywood money-makers included ‘Wives on Strike’ and ‘The CEO’, which helped locally-made films to increase their share of Nigerian cinema takings to 30% in 2016, compared with 15% in 2015

2017 has begun as 2016 ended, with ‘The Wedding Party’ being the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, with another N200 million in the bag and N405 million in total. This sets a very high bar for the Nigerian film industry and wins an argument that has raged for years in Nollywood – whether Nigerian movie fans would support Nigerian films in the cinema, as they have always done for Hollywood blockbusters.

According to Mo Abudu, Executive Producer of the movie, it has always been a question of quality. “We set out, quite deliberately, to make a high-quality film that any Nigerian would be proud of and would be happy to spend their hard-earned money on. This is a process we started with ‘Fifty’, the debut feature from EbonyLife Films, which was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2015 and the only Nigerian title screened at the BFI London Film Festival that year. The music industry has proved already that if our creative products are good enough, Nigerians will buy them in preference to foreign imports and make international stars out of our artistes.”

At a recent entertainment industry roundtable forum, filmmakers appeared to be optimistic about the future of Nollywood despite numerous challenges, including a lack of funding. In part, they were inspired by ‘The Wedding Party’ and pondered the lessons that might be gleaned from its unprecedented performance. One producer, while reserving his thoughts on some creative aspects of the film, was forthright in his praise of its universally appealing story, stellar cast and comprehensive marketing campaign – a formula he felt Nollywood had neglected in the past.

‘The Wedding Party’ has become a Nigerian phenomenon, with movie-goers returning to cinemas to watch the film for a third, fourth or even fifth time, taking family, friends and work colleagues with them. Enthusiastic fans give multiple reasons for the film’s appeal, but they all seem to agree on a few key ingredients: a good script, a romantic storyline, strong family themes, beautiful sets, gorgeous costumes, lots of laughs, and characters that they can relate to. Moreover, everyone identifies with the lavish Nigerian wedding, contentious relatives and almost-chaotic proceedings that defy even the most careful planning.

What goes almost unnoticed is how ‘The Wedding Party’ avoids the technical glitches that affect most local productions, in terms of continuity, editing, cinematography and the soundtrack, thereby increasing its appeal to filmgoers who tend to avoid Nollywood movies at the cinema.

The director, Kemi Adetiba, is careful to avoid the over-acting that is so prevalent in local movies and guides the cast to superb performances. Relative newcomers like Banky W and Adesua Etomi, look comfortable alongside veteran actors Richard Mofe-Damijo and Ireti Doyle, while the comedy genius of Sola Sobowale, Ali Baba and AY shine through.

Moses Babatope, COO of FilmOne Distribution, believes that this is just the start of a genuine renaissance for his industry. “This has been an amazing year for Nigeria, with new cinemas increasing the number of screens to 135 and box-office returns approaching N3.5 billion. With ticket sales of over N400 million, ‘The Wedding Party’ has shown that the best Nollywood movies can beat the Hollywood blockbusters in their home territory.

Rogue One, part of the Star Wars franchise, has made more than $1 billion (N315 billion) worldwide, but was out-performed by ‘The Wedding Party’ right from their opening weekend and throughout the Christmas/New Year holidays. For the first time, Nollywood is competing with Hollywood at the Nigerian box-office and winning.”

The Biography Of Ezenwo Nyesom Wike [Age, Life Profile & Net Worth]

p

Ezenwo Nyesom Wike (born December 13, 1967) or simply Nyesom Wike, is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who is the sixth and current Governor of Rivers State. He is an Ikwerre from Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State.

He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party and was educated at Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

Wike was appointed Minister of State for Education on 14 July 2011. He was later appointed the Acting Minister of Education, after Mrs Riqqayatu was sacked but resigned before finishing his term to campaign for Governor of Rivers State. He was replaced by Viola Onwuliri.

In 2014, he won the Rivers State People’s Democratic Party primary and chose former Secretary to the State Government Ipalibo Banigo as his running mate for deputy governor.

He defeated Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the April 11 Gubernatorial Polls to emerge as governor.

On May 13, 2015, the Election Tribunal for Rivers State, sitting in Abuja, commenced the hearing on the election of Nyesom Wike. Dr Dakuku Peterside of the APC is seeking the tribunal to nullify the election of Nyesom Wike of the PDP who was declared winner as governor in the poll held on April 11, 2015, on the grounds that it was fraught with malpractices and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Nyesom Wike opposed the hearing of the case in Abuja, arguing that the Tribunal should be held in Port Harcourt. But the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachawa, rejected Wike’s arguments and ordered that the tribunal be held in Abuja, for reason of security.

Justice Zainab also ordered that, besides Rivers, all Election Petition Tribunals for Adamawa, Borno and Yobe beheld in Abuja.

After failing to serve Wike with court summons, presiding Justice Muazu Pindiga approved the request by Mr Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN), the counsel to Dr Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to grant an order for substituted service on the governor-elect because Wike had been evading service of court summon and other processes in the petition challenging Wike’s elections. Akeredolu stated that the court bailiffs had on several occasions visited Wike’s residence to effect court service on him but was on all the occasions turned back at the gate by Wike’s security guards upon discovery that he was a court bailiff.

Ruling on the petitioner’s counsel’s motion, Justice Pindiga, who granted the prayers, ordered that the court processes should be pasted on the wall of Wike’s house. He said that “I have gone through the motion ex-parte and it is hereby granted; all the court processes are deem valid.” Justice Pindiga then ordered that substituted service be effected against Wike either by pasting the court process on Wike’s house or at the office of the PDP secretariat in Rivers state or in Abuja.

The River State governorship election tribunal nullified the election of Mr Nyesom Wike on October 24, 2015. The election tribunal ordered governorship election rerun in Rivers State within 90 days immediately after the day of judgment. Wike has said he will appeal the ruling of the tribunal.

The Election Tribunal was informed that the Independent National Electoral Commission in Rivers awarded Mr. Wike votes almost five times higher than the actual, authentic total number of voters accredited with card readers and Permanent Voter Cards which was 292, 878, which was the total number of accredited voters for the April 11, 2015 gubernatorial election in Rivers. The result as declared by the Returning Officer for Rivers State Mr. Osasere Orumwense on April 13, 2015 stated that Mr. Wike was awarded 1,029,102 votes, thus winning the election.

However document was signed by Ibrahim Bawa, the acting director in charge of INEC Legal Unit and Abimbola Oladunjoye, head of unit, Data Management, of the Commission’s Information Communication Territory Department. According to the result declared by the Returning Officer for Rivers State, Osasere Orumwense on April 13, Mr. Wike was awarded 1,029,102 votes, representing 87.77 per cent of 1,228,614, being the conjured number of total accredited voters. But the tribunal was informed that according to INEC documents, tendered as court evidence, the total number of accredited voters in Rivers was only 292, 878. It was also common knowledge, however, that there was widespread malfunction of Card Readers on the Election Day prompting the extension of the election to the next day and granting recourse to the use of manual accreditation without the faulty card readers.

The INEC document was signed by Mr. Ibrahim Bawa, the acting director in charge of INEC Legal Unit and Abimbola Oladunjoye, head of unit, Data Management, of the INEC’s Information Communication Territory Department. The commission’s central server captured all actual validated and authenticated votes for the Rivers State elections on April 11, 2015, making fraud by manual accreditation impossible.

In that election, only those votes captured by the central servers from the PVC-SCR are deemed accredited and valid; manual accreditation is not allowed for governorship elections. The Court of Appeal has however ruled in the case of Agbaje vs Ambode that the non use of card readers is not a ground to nullify an election. The River State governorship election tribunal nullified the election of Mr Nyesom Wike on October 24, 2015.

The election tribunal ordered governorship election rerun in Rivers State within 90 days immediately after the day of judgment generating uproar within the country as to alleged partisanship and corruption within the judiciary.
