Barca close in as Real fixture is called off…See full details

Lionel Messi struck another trademark free-kick as Barcelona moved to within one point of La Liga leaders Real Madrid with a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. Madrid have two games in hand, the first of which was supposed to take place on Sunday at Celta Vigo.

However, that match has been called off after wind damage to Celta’s Balaidos stadium left the ground unsafe to hold the game, La Liga confirmed after a security evaluation was carried out by local authorities.

Barca took their chance to apply pressure at the Camp Nou, but needed some wasteful finishing by Athletic in a much tighter game than the scoreline suggests.

Luis Suarez was left on the bench to allow Paco Alcacer a rare start and he netted his first La Liga goal since joining from Valencia for 30 million euros ($32 million) in August, whilst Messi came off 25 minutes from time.

“Today a lot of players who haven’t had a lot of minutes took part and showed what they can do,” said Barca boss Luis Enrique.

“We were able to give a rest to some because, without that, it is impossible to compete at 100 percent with all the games we have coming up. “Thirdly, we’ve won three marvellous points.”

Athletic should have been in front before Alcacer’s 18th-minute opener as Raul Garcia’s low effort was turned onto the post by Marc-Andre ter Stegen before Inaki Williams headed wide when unmarked from 12 yards out.

Alcacer has endured a torrid time since joining Barca but settled the hosts when he turned home Neymar’s cut-back inside Gorka Iraizoz’s near post.

Athletic’s day was summed up with Barca’s second, five minutes before half-time. After scoring in both legs of the Copa del Rey last 16 clash between the sides from free-kicks last month, Messi again outdid Iraizoz from the narrowest of angles.

– Pique injured –
This time, though, the goalkeeper was more at fault than brilliance from the Argentine as Messi registered his 31st goal in 30 games this season.

Only injuries to Gerard Pique and Rafinha blighted Barca’s day. Pique limped off at half-time as a precautionary measure with a groin strain, whilst the Brazilian suffered a knock in clashing with Ter Stegen.

Messi then took a rare break as he was replaced by Sergi Roberto.

Yet, even that change worked in Barca’s favour as Aleix Vidal was pushed into a more advanced role from right-back and rounded off the win by firing into the far corner 23 minutes from time for the Catalans’ 100th goal in all competitions this season.

In Vigo confusion reigned for hours as to whether Balaidos would be safe enough to host the European champions on Sunday.

However, La Liga finally issued a statement confirming the postponement, saying the stadium “will not be secure for players and fans.” Celta’s Galician rivals Deportivo la Coruna saw their clash with Real Betis on Friday also postponed due to weather damage to Deportivo’s Riazor ground.

Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid strengthened their hold on the final Champions League position in fourth as Fernando Torres scored twice to see off lowly Leganes 2-0 at the Vicente Calderon.

Torres won the penalty that led to the opening goal on 15 minutes as he was chopped down by Dimitrios Siovas.

For the fifth time in his seven penalties for Atletico, Antoine Griezmann failed to find the net as Iago Herrerin saved his tame effort, but Torres poked home the rebound for his first league goal since September.

And the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker doubled the lead just six minutes into the second-half when he dinked home Angel Correa’s fine through ball.

Buratai charges troops on commitment to fight against insurgency (Read full details)

Nigerian Army

The Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has charged troops fighting insurgency in the north east to remain committed and be focused toward routing the insurgents.

Buratai gave the charge on Saturday in Jos, at the celebration of West African Social Activities (WASA), by 3 Division Nigerian Army, Rukuba, Jos. The COAS, who was represented by Maj. Gen. Rojas Nicholas, Commander of Operation “Safe Haven”, said that such focus was key to winning the war.

The army chief said that the military had made significant achievements so far, and expressed optimism that the war would soon be over. He expressed happiness that WASA was being celebrated after many years, and attributed that to the prolonged fight against insurgency.

“Celebration of WASA is an indication that the fight is almost over; I believe that by next year, when we will be celebrating again, our children, soldiers and husbands would be back,” he said.

Buratai expressed the determination of the Nigerian Army to defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity and ensure peace in all parts of the country.

Aubameyang strike helps Bayern extend lead…See full details

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted his 17th Bundesliga goal of the season Saturday as Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 win over flu-hit RB Leipzig left Bayern Munich four points clear at the top.

Aubameyang remains two goals ahead of Bayern hot-shot Robert Lewandowski in the race to be the German league’s top scorer thanks to his superb first-half winner.

The Gabon striker headed home after teenage French winger Ousmane Dembele ghosted past two RB defenders down the right wing and crossed for Aubameyang to head home unmarked on 35 minutes.

Leipzig made Dortmund work for the win as Germany winger Marco Reus squandered two of Dortmund’s four clear second-half chances. “We won the game, that’s what counts,” a relieved Reus told Sky. “We put up a good fight, it was a very aggressive game and the win is okay.”

There was drama in added time as Leipzig sub Federico Palacios Martinez, making his Bundesliga debut, put the ball in Dortmund’s net, but was flagged for a marginal offside.

Leipzig struggled without top-scorer Timo Werner, midfielder Diego Demme and striker Marcel Sabitzer, who all have flu, while playmaker Emil Forsberg was suspended.

The result lifted Dortmund from seventh to third, eight points behind Leipzig, who are four adrift of Bayern after Carlo Ancelotti’s Bavarians had earlier drawn 1-1 with Schalke in Munich.

Lewandowski’s deft chip gave Bayern an early lead at the Allianz Arena before Schalke defender Naldo drilled home a free-kick on 13 minutes to level. Captain Philipp Lahm made his 500th appearance for Bayern, who had to work for their point. “It was a tough game because Schalke played well,” said Ancelotti.

“We started well, but were not so compact and our lines between the midfield and defence were too far apart from one another. “We could only increase the pressure slightly at the end, but it was not enough.”

Bayern made a bright start by taking the lead after nine minutes. Arturo Vidal threaded a pass to Lewandowski and the Poland striker lifted his shot over Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann.

– Bayern labour –
But Schalke kept their composure and equalised four minutes later when Naldo hammered a free-kick past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

It completed the scoring, but both sides squandered clear first-half chances as Schalke striker Guido Burgstaller hit the crossbar, just like Lewandowski did at the other end.

This was a tight, bruising encounter as Schalke fought hard for the point which left them 11th. “Our plan would have worked out 100 percent if we’d won, but we can be very happy and can live with the point,” said a delighted Schalke coach, Markus Weinzierl.

Hoffenheim, the last team in a top European league to lose their unbeaten record last weekend, are fourth after their 4-0 hammering of Mainz at home. Midfield playmaker Sebastian Rudy’s long pass was chested down by striker Mark Uth, who drilled home his shot with five minutes gone to put Hoffenheim 1-0 up.

Midfielder Marco Terrazzino headed their second nine minutes from time with replacement striker Adam Szalai then scoring two goals off the bench against his old club.

Hertha moved up to fifth with a 1-0 win at home to strugglers Ingolstadt as Japan midfielder Genki Haraguchi scored the winner after just a minute at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

Cologne are sixth following their 1-0 win at Wolfsburg thanks to Anthony Modeste’s second-half penalty, having been fouled by Wolves goalkeeper Diego Benaglio in the area.

Borussia Moenchengladbach picked up their second straight win with a 3-0 victory at home to Freiburg courtesy of goals from captain Lars Stindl, striker Raffael and winger Patrick Herrmann to go tenth.

Kane keeps Spurs title hopes burning…See full details

Tottenham Hotspur's English striker Harry Kane scores the opening goal from the penalty spot during the English Premier League football match between Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough at White Hart Lane in London, on February 4, 2017.<br />OLLY GREENWOOD / AFP

Harry Kane’s penalty ended Middlesbrough’s resistance as Tottenham’s 1-0 win on Saturday kept their flickering Premier League title challenge alive.

Spurs are nine points off runaway leaders Chelsea thanks to Kane’s second half spot-kick — the players answering manager Mauricio Pocchetino’s demand on Friday to maintain their hold on second place and pray for Chelsea’s form to slump.

Tottenham lost precious ground after being held by Sunderland in their previous game and Middlesbrough were in danger of repeating the trick.

That was until Kane struck in the 58th minute to give the hosts their seventh successive home win and leave Middlesbrough — without a win away since the opening month of the campaign — looking nervously over their shoulders.

Aitor Karanka’s side are just a point above the bottom three. Tottenham’s task would have been much tougher had Alvaro Negredo not planted Adama Traore’s right-wing cross over in the opening minutes.

It appeared to spark Spurs into action as man of the match Korean international Heung-Min Son saw his low shot pushed out by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Dele Alli was next to try, but hit the side netting after Christian Eriksen’s shrewd pass had opened up the visitors’ defence.

Valdes, though, could find himself in hot water with the Football Association after raising his hands at Alli in the aftermath which was missed by referee Mark Clattenburg but caught on camera.

It promised to be a busy night for the Spaniard, who was saved by his post in the 24th minute. Eriksen’s corner was met by Toby Alderweireld and the Belgian’s powerful header bounced off the outside of the post.

Middlesbrough frustrated the home side but the breakthrough almost arrived via Kane in the 24th minute. Son’s cross found the England striker but Kane was stretched and could not direct his header on target from six-yards out.

The game was played exclusively in Middlesbrough’s half but Karanka’s side were happy to sit back and soak up pressure. When it looked like they had been breached, the assistant referee’s flag saved them as Kane had strayed offside after turning home Son’s cross.

Spurs were hitting a brick wall as Eriksen’s piledriver was pushed away by Valdes but Spurs were finally presented with the chance in the 57th minute that would not be passed up.

Son was tripped by Espinosa Bernardo and Kane, who blazed his last spot-kick over the crossbar last month at Southampton, sent Valdes the wrong way. Two minutes later Spurs would have doubled their lead when Kane played in Eriksen, only for Valdes to once again come to Middlesbrough’s rescue.

The game was finally opening up and the lively Son shot just wide but Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal had still not had a shot to save. Negredo, who spurned his side’s best chance, saw an overhead kick drift wide before Marten de Roon steered a volley just off target in the last minute.

Oxlade-Chamberlain in ‘sack Wenger’ Twitter gaffe…See full details

Arsenal's English midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain / AFP PHOTO / Justin TALLIS /

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain risked angering Arsene Wenger after the Arsenal midfielder ‘liked’ a tweet calling for the Gunners boss to be sacked following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat against Chelsea.

Wenger’s side saw their title challenge suffer a huge setback as they were blown away by Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The third placed Gunners now trail Chelsea by 12 points and Oxlade-Chamberlain added to the tension around his team when he appeared to show support for a Twitter post demanding Wenger’s dismissal.

Less than an hour after the full-time whistle, Oxlade Chamberlain, who was used by Wenger in an out of position central midfield role against Chelsea, liked a Twitter post from popular Arsenal YouTube channel, Arsenal Fan TV, with a video entitled “Wenger Needs to Go!”

Oxlade-Chamberlain apparently didn’t understand what he was adding his backing to and the England international quickly removed his like of the tweet, but not before it had been spotted by a wider internet audience.

At a time when Wenger, currently serving a touchline ban, is sure to come under fire from frustrated Arsenal fans, Oxlade-Chamberlain tried to limit the damage when he returned to social media later in the day.

“I didn’t mean to like that post earlier obviously. Didn’t even realise I had!” he wrote.
