The Lagos state command through the it’s operatives from Victoria Island division have arrested a 23 – years old suspect for offence of robbery.

The suspect George Onuh who was accompanied by his gang member still at large had waylaid and dispossessed their victim one Bola who was carrying a large sum of money just withdrawn from the bank.

The alarm raised by the victim attracted the police operatives on patrol around the vicinity, who trailed the suspects to law school area where one of the suspects was apprehended and the cash recovered from him while the other fled with the motorcycle used for the operation.

The victim while narrating her ordeal to the police, said she had gone to GTBank on Adetokunbo Ademola street to withdraw some cash, and in the banking hall she sighted the suspect and thought he was a customer but was surprised when the same supposed customer waylaid her and pointed a gun at her to dispossess her of her money.

The recovered money was subsequently handed over to the victim.

The exhibit recovered from the suspect is one locally made pistol with six rounds of live ammunition.

The command’s spokesperson Sp Dolapo Badmos said the commissioner of police CP Fatai Owoseni has directed that the suspect and exhibits be transferred to SARS Ikeja while effort is on to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Amid speculations about the state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari currently on vacation in the United Kingdom, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, said on Thursday that he had spoken with the president.

According to the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Turaki Hassan, the President called Dogara on Wednesday night.

“The President called the Speaker at about 9.20 p.m. on Wednesday and the two leaders spoke for a little over five minutes.

“Although the President and the Speaker discussed other national issues, much of it centred on how the Executive and the Legislature can work together to ensure food security for Nigerians and prevent a relapse into events of 2016,’’ Hassan said in a statement.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, who said he had also spoken with Buhari, tweeted: “He is hale and hearty, going by his voice on telephone which suggested that he is in sound health.’’

The President had proceeded on a 10-day vacation in UK on Jan. 19 for a routine medical check as indicated in a letter to the Senate which also authorised Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to act as president pending his return.

However, at the expiration of the 10 days, the President, who could not make it back to the country, transmitted another letter to the Senate requesting extension of time to complete his check-up.

A brawl broke out in South Africa’s parliament Thursday as guards exchanged punches with opposition lawmakers who shouted down President Jacob Zuma as he tried to deliver his state of the nation address.

In chaotic scenes, guards in white shirts forcibly ejected about 25 members from the radical leftist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party who prevented the president from speaking for about an hour.

“We have been patient with you, we have been trying to give you an opportunity to express yourselves but… it is being abused,” Speaker Baleka Mbete told the EFF lawmakers before they were thrown out.

The president’s annual address to parliament in Cape Town has descended into mayhem for the past three years as the EFF — dressed in red workers’ overalls and berets — attempt to disrupt Zuma’s speech.

Zuma, head of the ruling ANC party, appeared unbothered by the violence unfolding in the chamber and finally took to the podium with his trademark chuckle.

Shortly before the guards moved in, EFF leader Julius Malema described Zuma as “an incorrigible man rotten to the core”.

Malema also turned his ire on Speaker Mbete, telling her: “Your conduct has failed you. You are irrational, impatient, partisan.”

– Stun grenades outside parliament –

Police fired several stun grenades outside parliament to keep rival ANC and EFF supporters apart.

A huge security presence was mobilised on Thursday evening to stop a repeat of last year when clashes erupted on the streets of Cape Town.

Zuma, 74, has faced growing public criticism over a series of damaging corruption scandals, worsening unemployment levels and slowing economic growth.

In December he beat back an attempt by at least four ministers to oust him, following local elections that delivered the ANC’s worst-ever results.

He is set to step down as party leader in December, before the general election in 2019 that will mark the end of his two-term reign as national president.

South Africa, the continent’s most industrialised economy, expanded by about 0.4 percent last year. Inflation hit 6.8 percent in December and unemployment has risen to a 13-year high of 27 percent.

Increased numbers of anti-apartheid veterans, ANC activists, trade unions, civil groups and business leaders have urged Zuma to resign.

“You must know that as a nation we no longer have confidence in your leadership,” Sipho Mila Pityana, leader of the Save SA action group, said on the eve of Zuma’s speech.

However Zuma retains strong loyalty among many rank-and-file ANC party members and its lawmakers.

We will do our best to take Nigeria out of recession, says Saraki (Read full details)

Senate President, Bukola Saraki

President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki, on Thursday said the National Assembly was committed to finding solutions to the recession ravaging the country.

He made this known when he received the European Union (EU) delegation which visited him in Abuja.

According to a statement by Chuks Okocha, his Special Assistant on Print Media, Saraki said that the national assembly was working on some legislation aimed at propelling Nigeria out of recession.

He commended the EU for monitoring the 2015 general elections in the country, which, he said, had set new standards for other African countries to emulate.

Saraki said that without good economy that could sustain improved standard of living of the ordinary citizens, the legislature would not be seen to have succeeded.

He said the senate had identified 11 economic recovery bills which could help to create veritable environment for private investments, job creation, infrastructure improvement and growth of national Gross Domestic Product.

“We have our economy recovery plan.

“We are also looking at some priority Bills, infrastructure sector that will enable private sector participation which will bring more money for government in the social services sector, like education and health’’.

On the 2015 elections, Saraki commended EU for its support, saying “for the first time we have been able to transfer power from one party to the other and in a peaceful manner.

“I think it has sent signal all over Africa. There was a peaceful transition in Ghana as well. It was almost done in Gambia, but I don’t know what happened but we finally did it.

“I want the EU to continue with the role you played and we thank God that it went well; I commend you and hope that it will encourage you to come back when next needed.”

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Mr Santiago Fisas, said that the visit was to explore better ways of enhancing the partnership between EU and the Nigerian parliament, particularly on how to deepen democracy.

“We believe that relationship between states and the parliaments are important for the growth and development of democracy and development,” he said.

Fisas said that the EU knew the importance of Nigeria in Africa and that the fact informed the extension of its hands of fellowship to Nigeria’s parliament.
