Colombia opens talks with ELN rebels…Read full details

The Colombian government is set to sit down for a first round of peace talks with the ELN rebel group Wednesday, seeking to end a 53-year conflict that has killed more than 260,000.

The negotiations with the National Liberation Army (ELN) — the country’s last active rebel group — mark a new milestone in the Colombian peace process, after President Juan Manuel Santos’s government sealed an historic accord with the country’s largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), in November.

“The dialogue with the ELN fills us with optimism,” Santos tweeted on Monday, hours after a ceremony to open the talks in the host country Ecuador. “New generations and the victims deserve that the talks move forward and we arrive at a complete peace.”

The small ceremony took place at a Jesuit retreat outside the capital Quito.

“We have before us the opportunity to finally turn the page on this war,” said the government’s chief negotiator, Juan Camilo Restrepo.

But experts warn the ELN will be a tougher negotiating partner than the FARC.

There was friction between the two sides even as they celebrated the formal opening of talks.

Restrepo warned the rebels that if they fail to give up kidnapping, “it will be very difficult to advance.”

The ELN’s chief negotiator, Pablo Beltran, for his part called on the government to “take responsibility” for its actions during the conflict — saying the rebels were prepared to do the same.

Colombia is the scene of the last major armed conflict in the Americas.

South America’s third economy and the world’s biggest cocaine producer, the country has been torn since the 1960s by fighting that has drawn in multiple leftist rebel groups, right-wing paramilitaries, drug gangs and the army.

November’s landmark peace accord with the FARC, the oldest and largest rebel group, leaves the ELN the last active guerrilla insurgency.

It has an estimated 1,500 fighters, mostly in the north and west.

– ‘More fundamentalist’ than FARC –
The talks come after three years of secret negotiations and an embarrassing false start in October, when the ELN refused to release its most high-profile hostage, the ex-lawmaker Odin Sanchez.

A flurry of behind-the-scenes negotiations followed, leading to Sanchez’s release on Thursday in exchange for two ELN prisoners.

In a further goodwill gesture on Monday, the ELN rebels released a soldier they had captured two weeks earlier.

But there will be more bumps in the road, warned Frederic Masse, an expert on the conflict at the Universidad Externado in Bogota.

“The ELN has more fundamentalist demands than the FARC,” he said.

“They want much deeper social change.”

– Complications: kidnappings, elections –
The talks mark the fifth effort to make peace with the ELN, after a string of failed attempts in the 1990s and 2000s.

Negotiators will now get down to business behind closed doors on Wednesday.

Despite Monday’s hostage release, the issue of kidnappings remains a touchy subject.

Unlike the FARC, “the ELN has still not renounced kidnapping,” long a source of revenue for both rebel groups, Kyle Johnson of the International Crisis Group said.

“They might kidnap someone else in the future and we’ll be back in the same difficulties.”

Elections in 2018 to decide Santos’s successor also threaten to complicate matters.

The peace process faces ongoing resistance from conservative opponents who accuse Santos of granting impunity to rebels guilty of war crimes.

Santos, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, had to tweak the initial FARC accord after voters narrowly rejected it in a referendum last October — a major embarrassment for the government.

The slightly revised version was ratified in Congress, where the president enjoys a majority.

A new poll found that Colombians are growing less optimistic about the chances for peace, however.

The polling firm Datexco, which interviewed 900 people nationwide on the prospects for peace, found 51.7 percent were optimistic, down from 67.4 percent in October.

Mourinho taunts Chelsea in style wars…See full details

Jose Mourinho took a swipe at his old club Chelsea as the Manchester United boss accused the Premier League leaders of lacking style.

Mourinho’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Leicester on Sunday and he was quick to highlight the difference between the dominant United display and what he perceives as the more prosaic efforts of Antonio Conte’s men.

Frustrated by criticism of the cautious nature of his teams when he was in charge at Chelsea, Mourinho made it clear that he is unimpressed the way the Blues, currently nine points clear at the top, and also Tottenham and Liverpool, have been praised despite employing safety-first philosophies.

“My team is playing very well but for many years in my career, especially in this country, when my teams were ruthless and phenomenal defensively I listened week after week to people saying that was not enough, despite winning the title three times,” Mourinho said.

“This season it looks that being strong defensively and good on the counter attack is art. That is a big change in England.

“We are Manchester United, we want to play attacking football. This is the way the fans want us to play.

“But I don’t want to be a manager of a team that doesn’t win matches. We have to score goals. Today we did and that made the difference. Today was very important.”

Mourinho’s claims seemed a little harsh, but he was in typically mischievous mood and even referenced his demise as Chelsea boss last season, which came following a defeat at Leicester.

“The last time I was in this chair I was sacked a day later,” he said with a smirk before bringing an end to his post-match press conference at the King Power Stadium.

Mourinho’s buoyant outlook was a contrast to his sulky demeanour following last week’s draw against Hull and the key to his mood swing was Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the United midfielder who tormented Leicester with his subtle passing and clever movement.

– Emotional –
Mkhitaryan scored United’s opener and set up the third for Juan Mata after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had doubled the visitors’ lead.

Mourinho acknowledged the first goal had been crucial as it boosted his team’s belief and shattered Leicester’s already fragile morale.

“We missed the first big chance but scored the next one. That is the story of the game,” he said.

“We didn’t play better than in many other matches. We were solid, but we scored goals.

“It makes all the difference. In the second half you are in emotional and tactical control.

“You kill the emotion of the opponent and the whole game looks different.”

Having left Mkhitaryan out at the start of the season, Mourinho is now convinced the Armenian has adapted to the Premier League.

“If a player isn’t playing sometimes it can seem the manager is disturbing them, but that is not true,” he said.

“Sometimes the best way to protect the player is not to play him. Henrikh is one of these cases, you see the magic things he does.”

Meanwhile, Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri insists he still has the backing of his players after their fourth successive defeat left them one point above the relegation zone.

Reports have suggested the Italian has lost some support among the troubled champions, but he is adamant they are together and can still avoid crashing out of the league a year after their shock title triumph.

“Everybody is frustrated. Of course we aren’t happy, we are very sad,” he said.

“I have said if the players don’t want me they can go to the owner, but they have not.

“We are together, solid like last season but without the results. That is the hard thing.

“We will fight until the end. Leicester is a club used to fighting. I’m confident about this.”

Brady fairytale as Patriots fightback seals Super Bowl…See full details

Tom Brady inspired the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history on Sunday as the New England Patriots stunned the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in an epic overtime duel.

In an extraordinary finale to the most challenging season of his career, Brady confirmed his right to be regarded as the best quarterback gridiron has ever seen with a fifth Super Bowl crown.

Brady rallied the Patriots brilliantly to overturn a 28-3 third quarter deficit, completing a thrilling win on a night of improbable drama at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

Brady, 39, collapsed to the turf with emotion after James White burrowed over from close range to score the winning touchdown on the opening drive of overtime.

“We all brought each other back,” Brady said. “We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle.”

The win capped a tumultuous season for Brady, who was banned at the start of the campaign for four games over the “Deflategate” saga.

National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell — widely viewed as Brady’s arch-nemesis — was subjected to deafening boos as he presented the Patriots with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Brady, who threw for 466 yards and two touchdowns, shrugged off suggestions that the win amounted to a personal redemption.

“This is all positive,” he said. “It took a lot of mental toughness. We’re going to remember this for the rest of our lives.”

The Falcons meanwhile were left shellshocked after snatching a defeat from the jaws of victory which ensures they remain on the list of teams never to have won a Super Bowl.

“There’s nothing you can really say,” said dejected Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

“That’s a tough loss. Obviously very disappointed, very close to getting done what we wanted to get done, but it’s hard to find words tonight.”

– Back from the dead –
The Patriots had looked dead and buried after the Falcons scored three first half touchdowns and an early score in the third quarter to power 25 points clear.

No team had ever come back from more than 10 points to win the Super Bowl before, and the Patriots looked to be heading for a crushing defeat as the Falcons ran riot.

But Brady, who had looked a pale imitation of himself for much of the game, suddenly fired into life in the second half to produce a performance that will go into National Football League folklore.

The Falcons, who had gone into the game boasting one of the most potent offenses in history, were left distraught and still waiting for their first Super Bowl crown.

They had appeared to be roaring to the championship with quarterback Ryan pulling apart the Patriots in the first half.

– Falcons dominant –
The Falcons scored touchdowns through Devonta Freeman and Austin Hooper before Robert Alford picked off Brady for an 82-yard interception score.

The Patriots could only muster a Stephen Gostkowski field goal to go into half-time 21-3 down.

A shellshocked Brady looked bereft after his interception blunder and it got worse for the Patriots early in the third quarter.

The misfiring Patriots offense again squandered their next possession and Atlanta were back on the charge, powering forward with a nine-play drive that ended with Ryan lobbing a six-yard pass to Tevin Coleman for a touchdown.

New England grabbed what looked like a consolation score when Brady found running back White to make it 28-9.

But Gostkowski missed the extra point afterwards, and it seemed as if all Atlanta had to do was ride out the clock.

But a further Gostkowski field goal made it 28-12 and when Brady hit Danny Amendola for a six-yard touchdown, with a successful two-point conversion to follow, it had suddenly become a one-score game.

Now the Falcons were flustered and a crucial drive faltered and the Patriots won the ball back.

An epic drive hinged on a logic-defying 23-yard reception to Julian Edelman, who somehow gathered a deflected pass to put the Patriots in enemy territory.

Brady marched his team forward and White scampered in from one yard to make it 28-26. Another two-point conversion followed to make it 28-28 and take the game to overtime for the first time in Super Bowl history.

The Patriots won the toss and elected to receive and with momentum clearly on their side, there was only going to be one outcome.

Brady, just as he had done in his first Super Bowl victory in 2002, nervelessly led his team forward and soon they were camped on the Atlanta line.

It was left to White to score his third touchdown of the night to clinch an amazing victory.

Dubai carrier Emirates said it has adjusted its crews for flights to the United States following President Donald Trump’s travel ban on people from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

The new president faced mass protests and global outrage over the controversial bar on travellers from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, as around 300 people were stopped or detained worldwide en route to the US.

“We have made the necessary adjustments to our crewing, to comply with the latest requirements,” a statement from Emirates said.

The carrier added that no staff member had yet been affected by the travel restrictions and stressed that all flights to the US were operating as scheduled.

Trump travel ban ‘great gift to extremists’: Iran FM (Read full details)

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Sunday that US President Donald Trump’s decision to ban arrivals from seven Muslim majority countries was “a great gift to extremists”.

“#MuslimBan will be recorded in history as a great gift to extremists and their supporters,” Zarif said as part of a string of tweets.

“Collective discrimination aids terrorist recruitment by deepening fault-lines exploited by extremist demagogues to swell their ranks.”

Trump on Friday signed a sweeping executive order to suspend refugee arrivals and bar visas for travellers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

Iran’s foreign ministry had earlier released a statement saying it would reciprocate with a ban on Americans entering the country.

But Zarif added that its restrictions would not apply to Americans who already have a valid visa.

“Unlike the US, our decision is not retroactive. All with valid Iranian visa will be gladly welcomed,” he wrote.

With more than one million Iranians living in the United States, the travel restrictions are expected to cause chaos for students, businessmen and families travelling between the two countries.

Parliament speaker Ali Larijani said the measures were proof of America’s “violent racist spirit”.

The foreign ministry released a travel advisory, calling on all citizens travelling to the US to “make completely sure” before leaving that they will not face obstacles.

Travel agents in Tehran said Saturday they had been instructed by foreign airlines, including Emirates, Etihad and Turkish Airlines, not to sell US tickets and that Iranians holding American visas were not being allowed to board US-bound flights.
